Bridget Jones Folle De Lui

Bridget Jones Folle De Lui

Okay, let's talk about Bridget Jones: Folle de Lui. Remember that? The one everyone and their moeder had an opinion on? Ja, precies die!

Right off the bat, let's be honest: Mark Darcy is GONE. Weg. Poof! How heartbreaking was THAT? I mean, Colin Firth, gone. It's like someone ripped out a piece of our rom-com-loving hearts. Seriously, Helen Fielding, why you gotta do us like that?

So, Bridget's a widow. A weduwe. Suddenly single mum with two kids. Two! Did you ever imagine Bridget with kids? I mean, she could barely keep a diary straight, let alone raise two tiny humans. But there she is, juggling school runs, work, and the sheer existential terror of being a middle-aged woman alone. Welcome to the club, Bridge!

And what does Bridget do, naturally? She starts dating. Of course, she does. But this isn't your regular run-of-the-mill dating. This is Bridget Jones dating in the 21st century. Think Tinder. Think dating apps. Think younger men. Uh oh!

Enter Roxster. Roxster. Is that even a name? He's like, 20-something, gorgeous, and... well, uncomplicated. He's a toyboy! A bit of arm candy! The kind that makes you feel young again, but also slightly panicked because he probably thinks Radiohead is 'retro'.

Now, this is where the book gets... controversial. Some people hated it. They were all, "It's not the Bridget we know and love! She's too desperate! She's acting her age!" But honestly? Isn't that the point? Isn't it refreshing to see a character like Bridget, who's always been a bit of a mess, still struggling with life and love in her 50s?

I mean, think about it. We're so used to seeing women "age gracefully" (read: disappear) in media. Bridget's not disappearing. She's out there, making mistakes, having questionable encounters, and generally trying to figure it all out. And isn't that what life is all about?

And okay, yeah, some of the situations are a bit... over the top. Like, the whole misunderstanding with Roxster’s mum is pure slapstick. But come on, it’s Bridget Jones! We're not expecting Jane Austen here. We're expecting awkwardness, inappropriate remarks, and maybe, just maybe, a happy ending. (Or at least, a somewhat-happy-for-now ending).

The book is really funny. Properly LOL funny. There’s the constant WhatsApp-group-chat shenanigans, the mortifying school mum encounters, and Bridget’s internal monologue, which is still as hilariously self-deprecating as ever. You find yourself cringing for her, but also rooting for her to succeed. Is she getting her life in order? Who knows! But she is trying and that's what matters!

Speaking of WhatsApp, the entire storyline with her friends is so relatable. Jude, Sharon, Tom... they're all still there, offering questionable advice and unwavering support. Haven’t we all got those friends? The ones who know all your secrets, even the ones you wish they didn't?

And the grief. Let’s not forget the grief. Underneath all the dating disasters and the embarrassing moments, there's a real sense of loss. Bridget's struggling with Mark's death, with raising their children alone, and with the fear of facing the future without him. It's heavy stuff, but Fielding handles it with sensitivity and humor, which is no mean feat.

Is Folle de Lui perfect? No, absolutely not. Does it stray from the original Bridget Jones formula? Definitely. But is it still entertaining, relatable, and ultimately, hopeful? I think so. It's a messy, imperfect reflection of modern life, with all its joys and sorrows. And isn't that what we loved about Bridget in the first place?

Also, the fact that she’s constantly forgetting things? Losing her keys? Arriving late? I mean, who hasn’t been there? It's like looking in a mirror, only slightly more chaotic (and hopefully, slightly less prone to dating younger men). Unless…?

But seriously, even if you hated the idea of Bridget moving on from Mark, you have to admit that Fielding took a brave risk. She could have just churned out another predictable rom-com. Instead, she gave us something a bit more challenging, a bit more complex, and a bit more real.

So, the big question: should you read it?

Pros:

* Hilarious: You'll laugh out loud, guaranteed.
Relatable: Even if you haven't dated a toyboy, you'll recognize the struggles of modern life.
Thought-provoking: It deals with grief, loss, and the challenges of aging with honesty and humor.
Nostalgic: It's great to catch up with Bridget and her friends again.

Cons:

Mark Darcy's Gone: Seriously, still not over it.
Some Plot Points a bit far fetched: Be prepared to suspend your disbelief.
Might make you feel old: Especially if you're closer to Bridget's age than Roxster's.

But honestly? Just read it. Form your own opinion. Argue with your friends about it. Isn't that what Bridget Jones is all about? Talking, oversharing and getting into trouble!

And then we can debate which Bridget Jones book is the *best. (Spoiler alert: it's probably the first one. But don't tell anyone I said that.)

What I loved most, even through the heartbreak and questionable dating choices, was Bridget's resilience. She gets knocked down, sure, but she always gets back up. She's a survivor. And that's something we can all admire, right?

Oh, and one more thing: the food descriptions! Seriously, Bridget's still obsessed with food. Whether it's cheese, wine, or emergency chocolate, she's always got something delicious (and probably unhealthy) on hand. Relatable, toch?

And finally, let's be real, who hasn't had a dating app disaster? Or sent a text to the wrong person? Or made a complete fool of themselves at a work event? Bridget just does it all on a grander, more public scale. Which is why we love her, I suppose.

So, go on. Grab a copy (or download it on your Kindle, because, you know, modern times). Pour yourself a glass of wine. And settle in for a good, messy, and ultimately, heartwarming read. You might just find yourself laughing, crying, and nodding along in recognition. Just don't expect a fairytale ending. This is Bridget Jones, after all. And life, as she knows all too well, is anything but predictable.

And let me know what you think! Did you love it? Hate it? Were you Team Roxster (god help you!)? Let's discuss! (Over coffee, preferably. And maybe a slice of cake. Because, Bridget.)
